Friday Five
Sep. 13th, 2002 01:03 pm1. What was/is your favorite subject in school? Why?
History, specifically medieval, ancient and rennaissance history. I liked literature, but in lit we had to analyze story-telling forms. In history, we just got to tell stories and analyze the stories themselves.
2. Who was your favorite teacher? Why?
Mrs. Dee O'Brien in the eighth grade, perhaps. She made me feel a million feet tall and got my creative juices flowing. Or perhaps Mr. Ahearn in seventh grade, who taught me to be a critical thinker. Then there was Mr. Hahn (ancient and medieval history), tenth grade, who taught me to look at things from a contemporary perspective when dealing with the past, and who also taught us that there no boring facts, just boring students. Then of course, there was Joe Forte, at Sarah Lawrence, who was always most appreciative of my hat collection.
3. What is your favorite memory of school?
Leaving for and arriving at Simon's Rock. Before then? Playing Cassandra in our second grade play of the Illyad, I guess.
4. What was your favorite recess game?
The one where we avoided the other kids and played space-opera make believe games. I didn't "get" recess.
5. What did you hate most about school?
The other kids, for most of my life. The homework. Being made to feel like a 2nd class citizen in high school (by my teachers). Letting people down.
